A friend of mine recently asked me how I know that God is always for me. I told him that I know this because of His character. First, He doesn’t lie. Titus 1:2 (ESV) says, “…in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began.”

Secondly, He doesn’t change. Numbers 23:19 (ESV) says, “God is not man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not fulfill it?” He’s there in the great times when everything in your life seems to be going smoothly but He’s also there in the troubled times when everything else around you is constantly changing. Relationships change, people change, landscapes change, health changes, culture changes, everything around you is changing so rapidly and your immediate future is filled with such uncertainty. You need to find an unchanging place to put your hope in.

Lamentations 3:22-24 (ESV) says, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The Lord is my portion,’ says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.’”

What else doesn’t change? His Word never changes: Psalm 119:89 (ESV) says, “Forever, O Lord, Your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.” His Love never changes: John 13:1 (ESV) tells us, “Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” His Faithfulness is unchanging: Psalm 100:5 (ESV) says, “For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, and His faithfulness to all generations.” His Mercy never changes: Psalm100:5 (NASB) says, “For the Lord is good; His mercy is everlasting And His faithfulness is to all generations.”

The same is true with His knowledge, sovereignty, holiness, power, faithfulness, goodness, patience, grace, and even His wrath. His attributes never change. It all comes down to this one question. Do you trust Him? Oh, it’s easy when everything is going right in your life and you’re on top of the world but how about when those troubled waters come, and they will come? Are you trusting Him then? Every created thing in this life will let you down at some point in time. Whether it’s circumstances, relationships, health, career, children, however unstable the circumstances around me are, God never changes. And that’s why I know that God is for me and I can trust Him.
