“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”
Philippians 2:3-7 ESV
I particularly like what the New Living translation says in verse five,“You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” Have you checked out your attitude lately? How is that going for you? Does it line up with Jesus’ attitude?
Let’s just start with these characteristics of Jesus’ attitude. “He emptied Himself.” In other words, Jesus wasn’t about himself – He was always about others. This cuts at the very throat of selfishness. Secondly, He became a servant. I wonder what our communities would be like if we all decided to serve one another. I wonder what our cities would be like? I wonder what it would be like if our churches looked beyond their four walls and just brightened somebody’s day? Galatians 6:10 NLT says, “Whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone. “Be proactive. “Who can I bless today? Who needs my help today?” I like what Joel Osteen said, “We weren’t created to live selfishly. We were created to make a difference in the lives of others.” John Bunyan, author of the classic Pilgrim’s Progress, said, “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.” Just start with these two things: humility and serving. This will change your whole attitude on how you look at life. It will change your day. It will change your moment.
