“One who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will lodge in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust!’”
Psalm 91:1-2 (NASB)

Life has a way of reminding us how vulnerable we really are. Whether it’s an emergency appendix surgery while on vacation, sickness, financial stress, broken relationships, or the spiritual battles that rage all around us, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But Psalm 91 is God’s powerful reminder that we are never unprotected, never alone, and never without hope.

Verse one starts right out with a promise: “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High…” Notice the word dwells.” This isn’t a quick visit or a passing prayer. It’s a lifelong position. It’s staying close to the heart of God, abiding in His presence, literally taking up residence and resting, yes, resting in the assurance that He is actively watching over you. When you dwell with Him, you find yourself under the shadow of the Almighty. What is a shadow? It means you’re close. You’re not far off—you’re right next to Him. Here is a powerful truth for you. When you’re in His shadow, no enemy can reach you without going through Him first!

Then in verse two, the psalmist makes it personal: “I will say of the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’” This isn’t just theology—it’s testimony. He’s saying, “This God isn’t just powerful—He’s mine.” Did you get that? He’s mine! There’s intimacy in that. There’s confidence. He’s declaring who God is to him: a refuge, a fortress, a place of strength when everything else is shaking.

And friend, when life gets dark, when fear knocks on your door, you can declare the same: “My God, in whom I trust.” Not in the economy, not in your health, not in other people’s opinions—but in the unshakable character of God. Because when God is your refuge, you may still face the storm—but the storm doesn’t have the final say. You do!

So today, I encourage you: Dwell in His presence. Declare His promises. Depend on His power. He is your shelter, your shadow, your refuge, and your fortress. No matter what you’re facing—you’re safe in the shadow of the Almighty.

Whether you’re reading this or listening to this, would you just pray this prayer with me right now? “Father, no matter what I’m facing right now, I declare I am safe in the shadow of the Almighty—You are my refuge, my fortress, and I trust in You completely.”
