“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”
Ephesians 2:10 (NASB1995)
Here God’s Word is telling you that you were created for a purpose. Wikipedia defines “purpose” this way: “The end for which something is done, created or for which it exists.” Clement Stone says this about purpose, “Purpose is the starting point for all achievement.” And it was John F. Kennedy who said, “Effort and courage are not enough without purpose and direction.” In other words, purpose serves as a principal to organize your life. How does this all relate to us as Christians in business?
1. God’s purpose for us is for His will to be done through us in the marketplace as it is in heaven. Luke 11:2 (NKJV) says, “So He said to them, when you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
2. What is our function as a Christian businessman or woman in the marketplace? Matthew 5:13-16 (MSG) says, “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
What are some things that will help you to become more purposeful?
1. Have a clear understanding of what your purpose is for your business.
2. Have a passion for your purpose. If you follow your passion, you are more likely to put more time and effort into your work, which can lead to more success.
3. Be disciplined to stay focused and not get sidetracked.
4. Walk with perseverance and courage during the rough times.
5. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit daily to help you to walk out your purpose that He’s defining for you in business.
